Expertise

Modelling Ecosystem Services
I develop and apply spatial modelling tools and economic valuation techniques to value natural capital and the flow of ecosystem services. I am a recognised international leader in the mapping and modelling of ecosystem services. I have developed standardised approaches for quantifying ecosystem services, including a blueprint which has been adopted by international organisations including Conservation International, the UN Statistical Division and the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR).

Policy and Decision Support Tools
Using the latest scientific methods and knowledge, I produce tools, policy papers and briefs, and scientific reviews and assessment that support decisions. Users of my work included Australian State and National governments, The United Nations Convention to Combat Degradation and Desertification, World Wildlife Fund, Rainforest Alliance, and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Integrated Economic-Environmental Modelling (IEEM)
Partnering with other international experts, I develop ecosystem service models and natural capital accounts using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting: Experiment Ecosystem Accounts. We link these with economy-wide Computable Generalised Equilibrium models such as GTAP to produce fully integrated environment-economy modelling.

Drought and Climate Change Risk Management
I develop a drought plans, technical guidelines and risk management policy frameworks. My recent clients include the United Nations Convention to Combat Degradation and Desertification.

Land Degradation Assessment
I use spatial data and models and expertise in ecosystem processes to identify land degradation risks from local to global scales. I use my expertise in land and ecosystems to make recommendations on cost effective solutions to reducing land degradation.

Collaboration and Science Leadership
I build and lead international consortiums and collaborations of scientific experts to deliver science that answers the great sustainability challenges of our time.
Clients
Australian Marine Conservation Society
I led a valuation of the ecosystem services provided by coastal and marine ecosystems of the Northern Territory, Australia.

Inter-American Development Bank
I modelled supply of ecosystem services in Colombia and Guatemala to link with the Integrated Environment-Economy Modelling platform.
European Commission
I reviewed the state of ecosystem services knowledge in the Pacific Region of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA)
World Wildlife Fund
With a consortium of international experts, we reviewed the state of play and developed new approaches for modelling the global socio-economic impacts of future changes in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Final report available here.
I modelled natural capital and supply of ecosystem services in the Baleh River Basin, Sarawak, Malaysia.

United Nations Commission to Combat Desertification
For the UNCCD I have:
Produced their Drought Resilience, Adaptation and Management Policy Framework and Technical Guidelines
Written a working paper on The Role of Ecological Restoration and Rehabilitation in Production Landscapes for the Global Land Outlook
Co-authored the Land Degradation Neutrality Scientific Conceptual Framework
Supported countries to report on progress toward achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 15.3 (Achieve a Land Degradation Neutral world by 2030).
Identified hotspots for achieving land degradation neutrality in South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia

Consultant
Ecosystem Science and Policy
I am a geographer with over 15 years experience in research for policy and decision making. My areas of interest are the modelling and valuation of ecosystem services, integrated modelling and assessment of socio-ecological systems, and the impact of land use and climate change on natural capital. My recent research has informed governments in Australia and internationally. My current clients include the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, European Commission, WWF, Inter-American Development Bank and Rainforest Alliance. I have published over 60 papers in international refereed journals and I am Associate Editor for the International Journal of Biodiversity Science, Ecosystem Services and Management.
